Opening Up a Character Home Creates Space for Family and Entertaining
A full renovation brings a contemporary upgrade to this 1912 Fairfield home for a
family of four while maintaining the stunning character of the original features and the turn-of-
the-century style. Typically small rooms, including a galley kitchen and closed dining space,
were opened up to accommodate the family and friends in the large kitchen with an island and
dining table adjacent to the living room. Millwork, tiling, colours and surface choices throughout
the kitchen and bathrooms honour the home’s vintage. The addition of an ensuite with a large
soaker tub, a walk-in shower, and a walk-in closet for the primary bedroom modernizes the
dated room.

Project Challenges
Opening up a heritage or older home may uncover additional complications
that need to be addressed in the renovation. From outdated or faulty electrical systems to water issues (these should show up in a surveyor’s report), the scope of renovation can change. Find out more about common issues and how to maximise the value of your renovation in our blog post.
