Light & Bright: Contemporary Comfort Revives a Mid-Century Charmer in Oak Bay
What once felt cramped and confined now feels airy and comfortable. For this Victoria home renovation, modern-day upgrades to the kitchen, dining room, living room, and primary bedroom enhance the style and functionality of this 1949-built residence. It’s now perfect for relaxed day-to-day living: a light-filled space featuring a roomy, uncluttered kitchen, more storage, and a seamless flow from indoors to out.
Maximizing the kitchen was the first priority. Collaborating with Carly Neal of Dashwood Design, a new layout involved closing off a second entrance from the living room to allow deeper storage and more counter space. We installed sophisticated quartz from counters to backsplash and classic white cabinetry for timeless appeal. Modern, streamlined appliances make cooking more efficient and enjoyable. This home renovation also included additional windows that flood the kitchen with natural light and allow an expansive view of the backyard.
Adjoining the kitchen, the dining area now boasts French doors that also invite light and lead out to a tiered back deck we built with durable, easy-maintenance composite decking. This new outdoor entertaining extension is ready for everything from lively BBQs to quiet morning coffees.
Moving back inside this Oak Bay home renovation, the living room gained storage and style with a custom bookshelf and gleaming fireplace surround. The primary bedroom boasts additional closets, increasing the original, limited storage space of the room.

Client objectives
Flintstones renovated this home 15 years ago for the previous owners and were thrilled to return to this Victoria property. The new homeowners are semi-retired and desired a comfortable and relaxing retreat for their current lifestyle and taste. More storage and improved flow were their functional priorities, while aesthetically, they wanted a refresh that blended contemporary style with the home’s midcentury features.
Project Challenges
The homeowners lived in the house throughout the 4-month renovation, so we had to ensure a safe, healthy, and accessible worksite at all times. Construction dust, debris, and noise were of special concern for the Flintstones team. As an interior and exterior detached home renovation in Victoria, we also had to consider the comfort and safety of close neighbours on either side. Lastly, structural work and engineering in the basement were required to support new living room framing above.
We maintained an amenable worksite and smooth client experience by:
- Working onsite within reasonable hours so as not to impede the clients when they were home
- Acquiring the necessary Oak Bay permits
- Keeping the worksite safe and clean by storing materials and equipment in out-of-the-way areas of the property
- Organizing trades strategically to minimize noise and traffic
- Setting up demolition, scaffolding, and installation of new windows, exterior doors, and decking, with the clients’ accessibility and safety top of mind
